By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) player Michael Salazar has been signed by the LA Galaxy of Los Angeles, the most recognizable Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

Twenty-nine-year-old Salazar said on Wednesday he signed for a year and an option.

“It’s a great move. It’s always been a dream to be at this organization. I went to school here. I’ve lived here for almost nine years, so definitely it’s a great place to be at,” said Salazar who flew from Nicaragua to Los Angeles after playing for Belize against Nicaragua in the two friendly matches held in Managua.

Breaking Belize News caught up with Salazar as he was driving to do his physical test today in Los Angeles. He said afterwards he was going to do a COVID-19 test and will report to training on Friday.

“I’m signing for a year and an option,” he said. Prior to the Galaxy, Salazar, who was born in New York but grew up in Cayo, has played for the Montreal Impact and the Houston Dynamo.

“I got drafted from the University of California Riverside out here in California to Montreal Impact. I spent 3 years over there,” he said.

“That was another dream of mine to get drafted. My mom was there, my aunt, my cousin, everybody, so it was really cool for me. Then my time in Houston, you know, just to be able to be a part of two MLS franchises at the time. I’ve never thought I could go that far but trusting the people behind and having faith and just working hard, it got me to where I am. And now to be a part of probably one of the biggest organizations out here in America with the LA Galaxy, it’s a dream come true for sure.”

Salazar said he’ll do whatever it takes to get playing time at the LA Galaxy.

“I’m a football player so I can do everything. Wherever they need me to play on the field whether that’s with the 1st team or the 2nd team, on the right, on the left, up top, whatever they need for me. It’s a blessing for me to be here, so I won’t take any moment for granted and I’ll just give everything I have.”

Salazar said he knows Greg Vanney, the coach of the first team as he played against him while at Montreal where he teamed up with Didier Drogba.

“I played against Greg Vanney, the first team coach when he was a coaching Toronto and I actually scored my first professional goal against his team which was assisted by (Didier) Drogba, somebody I looked up to since I was a little kid who assisted my first ever professional goal, you can’t make some of these things up you know. The dreams of mine, they are all just coming through one after the other. It’s just all with hard work and dedication. I feel like everything is right where it’s supposed to be.”

He said he also knows Yoann Damet, the coach of the second team.

“He worked in Montreal U18 when I was in Montreal with the 1st team, so they know a little bit of my profile. They thought I would be a good asset for the locker room and just my presence and the type of person that I am. I’m a humble kid. I grew up in Belize where all my family is from. I have this opportunity. They know the type of person I am, and you know hopefully I can come in and give everything for them and for the organization,” Salazar said.

Certainly, Belize will be rooting for him.
