By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Government of Belize says it is extremely concerned by the situation in Ukraine and urges all parties involved to exercise restraint.

“The Government of Belize is extremely concerned about the evolving security situation on Ukraine’s eastern border, which poses a threat to international peace and security,” said a press release by the Government of Belize Press Office.

“Belize urges all relevant parties to exercise restraint.”

Belize’s statement comes at a time when Russia has been building up its military presence at its border with Ukraine. BBC reports that Russia has 125,000 troops “equipped with everything from tanks and artillery to ammunition and air power”.

CNN reported that there is heightened tension between Ukraine and Russia and that Russia has been building up its troops at the border though it has denied that it plans to attack. CNN also reported that Russia claimed that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) support for Ukraine is a growing threat.

The statement said that Belize is calling all parties concerned “to intensify their diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the current tensions and to peacefully resolve the underlying issues which gave rise to this geopolitical situation”.

Belize, involved in a land dispute with Guatemala which claims part of our territory, “emphasizes its firm commitment to respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders, non-interference in the internal affairs of another state, the prohibition on the threat or use of force and peaceful resolution of disputes”.

The GOB Press Office release further said that “universal respect and adherence to these norms and principles of international law are fundamental to the maintenance of the international system and peace and security”.
