By Aaron Humes: The House of Representatives is meeting for the first time in 2022 today in Belmopan.
The agenda includes four new bills: the Central Bank of Belize (Amendment) Bill to further capitalize the national banking body; the Indictable Procedure (Amendment) Bill to expand the list of offences for trial without a jury in certain criminal cases; to allow for hearings or trials before the court to be conducted virtually and other issues; a bill to give effect to the provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES); and the Fisheries Resources (Amendment) Bill to provide specific penalties for certain offences.
The House is also expected to consider additional financing through supplementary allocation, particularly for the Ministry of Health, and a motion to formally condemn domestic violence and designate it “a national issue of significance” and discuss actions to end it.
Prime Minister John Briceno is in attendance after being cleared from COVID-19, while Moses “Shyne” Barrow has taken his seat as Leader of the Opposition after being appointed earlier this week. Predecessor Patrick Faber is absent.
We’ll have more from the National Assembly throughout the day.
