Man charged over $500 for mask offense but contends he was simply eating at the time

By BBN Staff: A Belize City man learned the hard way this week that not wearing your mask properly in public, even when eating can cost you.

Taxi driver Mark Green was fined $500, plus $5 cost of court after police found him in public with his mask down.

In court, he contended that he was eating at the time the officers came upon him, only to have the Magistrate reply, “The law does not take into consideration when you have to eat, spit, drink wipe your face, so, at all times when you are in public, you have to wear your mask properly. You cannot take it off for nothing.”

Green was ticketed for the offense on January 4, 2022, he was to have paid the fine by January 19, which is the 15 days grace period allowed to anyone.

He now has until May 18, 2022, to pay or will spend six months in jail for defaulting.
