By Aaron Humes: The amendment to the Misuse of Drugs Act concerning marijuana has been split into two bills following changes suggested in the Senate, according to Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, Kareem Musa.
“The Senator for the Unions, I believe it is, raised some concerns and suggested some changes to the Bill; those changes have since been made – I believe there were three changes – and one of in particular is to actually create a standalone Bill; so extracting the amendments that we made and creating a stand-alone Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Bill, which we have already done and which we have shared with the [Leader of Government Business] Senator Eamon Courtenay,” Musa explained.
Once the Senate committee has considered the changes, it will hopefully be approved there and sent back to the House where, as Musa indicated, the Opposition has signaled its support.
Musa made note that the legislation will help Belize take advantage of both economic and social opportunities as well as hopefully reduce crime related to the “plant with healing powers.”
