By BBN Staff: A Salvadoran national who has been living and working illegally in Belize for five years, was finally discovered by immigration authorities and taken to court.

Thirty-seven-year-old Mauricio Antonio Mendoza Medrano appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on immigration offenses and wasted no time in pleading guilty.

Personnel from the Department of Immigration said that there is no record of Medrano entering Belize through any legal entry points and that when authorities found him he had a passport that has been expired since 2018 and no other documentation to prove that he was in the country legally.

When asked why he came to Belize, Medrano said that the farming job he had in his home country was not making enough money, so he came to Belize in the hopes of greater financial opportunity. He said found something, so he stayed.

For the immigration offense, the court fined him $1,000 plus $5 cost of court, which he had to pay forthwith or face five months in jail.

There was also a removal order handed down against him, which means that he will be extradited back to his home country.
