By Aaron Humes: Some may say it is no less than they deserve, others that too much is beholden to them; but there is no doubt that the Stevedore community is getting critical assistance and attention from the Government of Belize and, it is hoped, their employers at the Port of Belize Limited.

Prime Minister John Briceño went over the details of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Minister of Public Utilities and Logistics Michel Chebat and Christian Workers Union president Evan “Mose” Hyde, including a payment of $1.5 million in compensation related to the privatization of the Port in 2002 and subsequent losses suffered economically by waterfront workers.

Once amendments have been made, stevedores will be eligible for Social Security, and they may get compensation for injuries at the hands of the police during a protest in July of 2020.

Stevedore gangs will also be allowed to work one in one out to reduce fatigue from unloading ships at odd hours.
