Taiwan’s Vice President tests negative for COVID-19 following his meeting with Prime Minister John Briceno

Posted: Friday, February 4, 2022. 6:42 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Vice President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Lai Ching-te (賴清德) was tested for COVID-19 after meeting with Prime Minister John Briceno who recently tested positive. Fortunately the Vice President tested negative.

Briceno and Lai had met in Honduras on January 27, when they both visited for the inauguration of the new President of Honduras Xiomara Castro.

Taiwan News reports that Lai took daily COVID-19 rapid tests during his stay in Honduras and tested negative in all of them. He’d also tested negative on his PCR tests but the issue arose of him being a close contact of Briceno after his infection was announced on February 1.

While Lai has tested negative, the Presidential Office says that a medical team will continue to monitor him and the remainder of the delegation that went to Honduras.

Meanwhile, a Presidential spokesperson said that President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) tasked Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) and Taiwan’s ambassador in Belize, David Chien (錢冠州), with delivering their best wishes for Briceno’s quick recovery. It was reported yesterday that Prime Minister Briceno has since been listed as “clinically recovered” from his COVID infection.
