By Aaron Humes: Two Canadian sailors whose vessel ran aground in the Lighthouse Reef were rescued by the Coast Guard on Thursday night.
After receiving the call around 8:16 p.m. personnel proceeded to a point two nautical miles South of Hat Caye where they encountered a sail vessel named “JOLIE BRISE II”, grounded with about two feet of water in the cabin.
The Canadians were taken to the Half Moon Caye Forward Operating Base where they received necessary assistance. Officers from the Belize Coast Guard and Rangers from Belize Audubon Society remain on scene and provided security for the night.
On Friday, Coast Guard and Belize Audubon Society conducted an initial assessment on the extent of the damage to the reef and vessel. They found that the vessel will need a salvage operation which will be guided by the Department of the Environment and Belize Port Authority.
The Belize Coast Guard transported the two Canadians to Belize City where members from the Belize Port Authority, Belize Police Department, Immigration Department, Department of the Environment and Health took over the case. The Coast Guard along with Belize Audubon Society will maintain security presence for the vessel until the salvage operation is completed.
