By Ruben Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) handed over six more houses in Salvapan, St. Matthew’s Village, and Benque Viejo del Carmen on Thursday, February 3.

The Government of Belize Press Office said the successful applicants for these houses “expressed their overwhelming excitement at now being able to spend Christmases, birthdays and special occasions in their own house with their families”.

The MIDH quoted the daughter of one of the beneficiaries saying that, “We can now sleep when it rains”.

“Words mean nothing if they aren’t accompanied by action,” said MIDH Minister Julius Espat.

“I said way back that we would build houses for deserving Belizeans, and there were those who didn’t believe. Well, here we are now, changing lives one home at a time.”

“I’ve never had a house I could call my own. It’s a dream come true for us, especially for my daughter who can’t see. We’re very happy to have our own home,” said Sandra Monterroza in St Matthews.

“We have to take care of everybody, and that’s our philosophy,” said Espat. “One love, one love, a Belizean love,” said Espat.

“At my age right now, I walk assisted by this cane,” said Thomas Marsden at Sr Matthews who had a ramp built to access his new house. “They also gave me the liberty to put some ideas how I wanted the ramp built. It is in preparation for my future mobility”.

Equally thankful were Doris Escobar and Nelly Mendez in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

“Two very hardworking women became house owners. The joy we feel is great. We thank Hon. Julius Espat and his team at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Development and Housing for making this possible,” said Cayo West area representative Jorge ‘Milin’ Espat.

“It’s very beautiful. I wasn’t expecting it, but there is a God and I believe in God, and I always thank Him for you,” said Escobar.

“Thanks for everything,” said a very emotional Mendez.

“As you can see the lady was overwhelmed with tears,” said Minister Julius Espat.

“And that just makes it worth the while. It makes you want to work harder to be able to give more people that opportunity.”
