By Aaron Humes: Today, February 6, was the day a girl lost her father – and the day a princess became a queen – when the then-Princess Elizabeth, 25, learned that her ailing father, King George VI, had died while on an official Commonwealth visit to Kenya.

The British High Commission in Belize’s social media page described what happened next: “In an instant, she had ceased to be Princess Elizabeth and became Queen Elizabeth II. Upon her Accession, a ceremonial body called the Accession Council met at St James’s Palace. The Council made a formal proclamation of the Accession. However, a new Monarch comes to the throne at the moment of death, hence the phrase, ‘The King is dead, long live The Queen!’.”

70 years, four children, a 73-year marriage, multiple Prime Ministers and Governors-General and a lifetime of service later, she is marking the day privately, according to the BBC.

In a personal message, Her Majesty, 95, said she remembers this day “as much for the death of my father, King George VI, as for the start of my reign”. She added, “I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me,” and further reflected on her gain of the support given “unselfishly” by Prince Philip and thanked the goodwill shown to her by “all nationalities, faiths and ages in this country,” signing off, “Your servant Elizabeth R.”

She also looked to the future, indicating that it was her sincere wish that son Charles, Prince of Wales’ wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, be known as Queen Consort when he becomes King.

The Prince of Wales has paid tribute to the Queen on her Platinum Jubilee for the “remarkable achievement” of reaching 70 years on the throne: “The Queen’s devotion to the welfare of all her people inspires still greater admiration with each passing year. We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother’s wish. As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.”

The pair married after Charles admitted to adultery which he described as having occurred after his first marriage to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, had “irretrievably broken down”.

Since then, Camilla has won over a cautious public. She has been praised for championing her own causes and interests, including supporting literacy charities, animal welfare, and organizations helping victims of domestic abuse.

Congratulations have poured in from the current and two former UK Prime Ministers – three of the 14 British prime ministers to occupy No 10 during her reign – as well as the White House, which has seen no less than 14 U.S. Presidents during her time in office of whom she met 13.
