501 Valvoline’s Derrick ‘Phenom’ Chavarria wins 83-mile race on Hummingbird Highway

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: 501 Valvoline’s Derrick ‘Phenom’ Chavarria won the 83-mile race on Hummingbird Highway organized by the Cycling Federation of Belize on Sunday, February 6.

Chavarria, who was also the first U23 rider, stopped the clock at three hours, 38 minutes, and 47 seconds, 12 seconds ahead of Westrac Alliance’s Jafari Castro and G-Flow’s Tevin Chapin who took the second and third spots respectively. Castro was the first Elite rider and Chapin, the second U23.

This was the second preparation race for the Digi Valentine’s Tour which comes up on February 19 and 20. The race started at the Belmopan Roundabout on the Hummingbird Highway, went all the way to the Coastal Road Junction and returned finishing at Armenia.

M&M Engineering’s Carroll Devin Azueta was fourth in 3:39:32, 45 seconds behind Chavarria.

Fifth place was captured by 501 Valvoline’s Oscar Quiroz who clocked 3:40:49. He was followed by his teammate Joslyn Chavarria Jr in sixth place with a time of 3:40:56.

G-Flow picked the next three spots with Giovanni Lovell (3:41:23) in seventh, Shawn Codd (3:41:37) in eighth, and Renan Codd (3:43:55) in ninth. Codd was the first junior.

Westrac Alliance’s Byron Pope rounded the top ten in 3:45:21.

Thirty-six riders in a 41-rider field completes the race in the hilly Hummingbird terrain.
