By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Anthony ‘Ja Rule’ Flores won a 20-mile race in Dangriga on Sunday over seven other riders and in a sprint to the finish along with three others.
The race started at 6:15 am at Ray Js Cool Spot by the Drums of Our Fathers Monument, headed to Mile Ten on the Hummingbird Highway just past the Coastal Road junction and back, according to race organizer Alfred Galindo Jr of the Griga Cycling Club.
Flores clocked 54 minutes edging Edmund Camal who finished second and Faron Flores third.
Dylan Levy was fourth.
Football referee Victor Williams rode in fifth two minutes later. Williams was followed a few seconds later by Kareem Lopez in sixth, James Teul in seventh, and John (no last name registered) eighth.
Football referee Victor Williams got a special prize for the oldest rider at over 50.
Galindo said the Griga Cycling Club plans to hold weekly Sunday races.
Their idea is to revive cycling in Dangriga and Southern Belize.
“We are an inclusive group that welcomes riders from across the country young and old,” said Galindo.
“We will be organizing races, tribute rides, and other events throughout the year. Our main focus is to encourage and develop young men and women to take up the sport. We intend to procure bikes, shoes, helmets, etc, from international donors to build the sport and most importantly give the youths an alternative that will help them be more disciplined, respectful, athletic, and healthy.”
