By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Seeking to strengthen trade with Belize, Dr. Gene Leon, president of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is leading a high-level mission on a one-week visit to Belize starting on Monday, February 7, 2022.
A CDB press release said strengthening trade, innovative financing, advancing agriculture, and building economic and climate resilience are issues Dr. Leon will discuss while in Belize.
Dr. Leon is expected to hold meetings with both private and public sectors including the Prime Minister John Briceño and Cabinet, the Governor of the Belize Central Bank, the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre which has its headquarters in Belmopan.
He is also participating in the launch of a US$ 1.5 million trade programme that is funded by CDB and the European Union-financed EPA and CSME Standby Facility.
Dr. Leon will also be making onsite visits to ongoing and completed projects in infrastructure, health, climate change, education, and trade will also be conducted said the CDB press release.
The CDB expects the mission will build on the longstanding relationship it already holds with Belize. It also intends to identify new opportunities and partnerships to advance Belize’s development and growth agenda.
Dr. Leon is accompanied by the vice-president of operations Isaac Solomon; director of projects Daniel Best; senior advisor Shelton Nicholls and coordinator of regional cooperation and integration Andrea Power.
