Daughter presses charges against mother for assault after family dispute gets physical

By BBN Staff: A Belize City mother was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today charged with assaulting her own daughter during a family dispute.

Fifty-five-year-old Vilma Novelo appeared unrepresented in court and needed a translator as Spanish is her first language and she is not fluent in English.

Allegations against her are that over the weekend she got into an altercation with her daughter on Sunday, February 6, and assaulted her.

The daughter reportedly called the police on her mother, saying that she went to visit her and they began to argue. At some point, the confrontation turned physical and she opted to press charges.

Novelo pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $500 plus one surety of the same.

She is due back in court on April 4.
