UDP Party Chairman: ‘We did not force out Patrick Faber’

Posted: Monday, February 7, 2022. 10:41 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Despite issuing a video announcing his pending resignation, Patrick Faber maintained that he wanted to remain the Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) until a new leader was chosen at a convention; however, the UDP’s National Party Council (NPC) decided that the video was enough.

Today, UDP Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte addressed the situation, stressing that the NPC’s decision did not amount to them forcing Faber out as leader.

Last week, Faber, via a letter to Peyrefitte, stressed that the NPC does not have the authority to remove him as Party leader. Reports are that he also logged into the Virtual NPC meeting held on Saturday, February 5, to express his intention to remain on as leader until March 27, the date set for the leadership convention.

Vice-Chairman Alberto August gave an update over the weekend saying that the vote to allow for his resignation to take effect on January 31 was 49 for, 48 against; a vote which Peyrefitte says is within the NPC’s purview.

“Last month, he came on television that he was voluntarily resigning and that that resignation would take effect on January 31…the national party council did not remove him, he resigned. He resigned on his own; effective January 31. All the NPC did on Saturday was to validate that resignation,” Peyrefitte.

Peyrefitte said that the deadline for nominations for those seeking to run in the upcoming leadership convention is set for Friday, February 11. In the meantime Area Representative for Corozal North and Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Party Hugo Patt, has been named interim Party Leader.
