By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) said today that the company “used local and renewable energy sources to stabilize the national grid following countrywide outage”.
“An unexpected interruption in supply from Independent Power Producer (IPP), Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) at Xulha, resulted in a power outage that affected all areas of the country at 6:46 p.m. on Monday, February 7, 2022,” said BEL in a press release on Tuesday.
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) started restoring the electric supply within 20 minutes in the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts using BAPCOL. Using hydro from BECOL, electricity was then restored to the Cayo District and the remainder of the country by 8:03 p.m.
“The gradual restoration was necessary to ensure the safe and steady return of power supply to customers through coordination with our local IPPs,” said the BEL statement.
BEL apologized for the inconvenience caused and thanked its customers for their patience and understanding while the BEL teams “worked to stabilize the national grid as we continue to provide service to meet the needs of communities across Belize”.
The power fault reported by the Mexican provider also affected Quintana Roo with the neighbouring city of Chetumal also reporting a blackout on Monday.
