Belize Progressive Party to the Briceño administration: ‘You promised you’d lower gas prices’

Posted: Tuesday, February 8, 2022. 8:25 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: This week, the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) called out the Briceño Administration over a campaign promise to lower the high cost of fuel once the People’s United Party (PUP) formed the Government of Belize.

BPP Party Leader Wil Maheia spoke with our newsroom today, recalling the days when Prime Minister John Briceño was in opposition and was heavily critical of the high cost of fuel.

“This government got into power on a landslide victory because they had promised the people they had a way to lower the fuel prices. They said they were smarter than the Barrow administrations and they could do it,” Maheia said.

He addressed the issue of international market prices, saying that even with the cost of oil on the world market, the prices Belizeans are paying at the pumps are inexcusable.

“When you look at the global markets, yes, the price increased but not even a fraction of what the government continues to ram down the throats of the Belizean people. Yes, the prices have gone up but not as much as this government increased them,” Maheia said.

On February 2, GOB announced that the price of Premium and Regular fuels would be going up, only seven days after the last price hike which also saw an increase in regular fuel.

The changes represented the first price change for the month of February and the fourth for the year to date.
