By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Cyclist Derrick Ryan Chavarria, known as “Baby Chav”, or the “Phenom”, in cycling circles is asking for assistance to help fund his education at Lees McRae College in the United States.

Eighteen-year-old Chavarria from the village of Georgeville in the Cayo district is a member of the 501 Valvoline Cycling Club. Last year, he won the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championship in the Dominican Republic and locally has excelled in Belize races making the podium several times for his club.

Chavarria said he’s been accepted “to attend Lees McRae College, with the help of CANO and Al Smith, for the fall semester,” and has “qualified for a $9,000USD/year academic scholarship which is ¼ of the total cost”.

According to Chavarria, Lees McRae College is a cycling college located in Banner Elk, North Carolina.

“My vision is to become a professional cyclist someday, racing along with the pros around the world. It will also be a dream come true to represent my country well and give back where I can,” said Chavarria.

“My mission is to train at optimal capacity while studying and racing internationally in hopes to get scouted and drafted by an international team and move forward”

“With this said, I am kindly asking the public for any financial assistance that will help me to attend this college. Your help will be greatly appreciated,” said Chavarria.

If you can assist him, get in touch with him through Facebook through the link in the first paragraph of this article.
