‘Mandatory COVID-19 insurance now available for online purchase,’ says Belize Tourism Board

Posted: Tuesday, February 8, 2022. 12:03 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) announced this week that the mandatory COVID-19 insurance for travelers coming into Belize through land borders and the Philip Goldson International Airport is now available for purchase online.

The BTB said that travelers can purchase the insurance, which becomes mandatory as of February 15, at www.belizetravelinsurance.com. The link for purchase can also be found at BTB websites at www.belizetourismboard.org and www.travelbelize.org

The BTB said that the insurance will help protect travelers against incurred medical and non-medical expenses, if they test positive for COVID-19 during their stay in Belize.

“The Insurance Plan, available for $18.00 US, provides coverage for up to $50,000 USD in medical expenses related to the treatment of COVID-19 for a period of 21 days including lodging expenses due to quarantine up to $2,000 USD (max $300/day USD). Travelers will also be covered for emergency assistance services such as air evacuation and emergency expenses related to pre-existing conditions. Furthermore, it will also cover trip cancellations and expenses incurred by COVID-19 positive travelers for extended stays,” the BTB said.

Travelers are reminded that airlines are not required to verify that a traveler has a purchased insurance policy upon check-in, as such it is recommended that they purchase the insurance prior to arrival. Those that did not purchase the insurance prior to arrival still have the option to do so upon arrival at the PGIA, and verification of travelers’ insurance will be done by the Immigration Department of Belize at the airport.

The BTB also said that several types of travelers are exempt from the mandatory insurance, they are: Belizeans & permanent residents, foreign homeowners, long-stay non-nationals, Peace Corps, military personnel, airline crew, and persons in Belize for less than 24 hours.
