Anthony Mahler defends his position on Yashin Dujon working at the Ministry: ‘There are no sacred cows’

By Benjamin Flowers: Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler says that performance and not politics is the motivation at his Ministry and he demonstrated it when he removed People’s United Party supporter Carlos “Obeah” Galves as the head of the Border Management Agency and brought in Yashin Dujon, who was a Chief Executive Officer in the United Democratic Party’s administration under Dean Barrow.

Today, Mahler defended his position on Dujon’s hiring, stressing that there are many professionals within the public service currently who have held positions in the previous administration.

“We are a government of the people by the people for the people, and Mr. Dujon as I know him is a true professional,” Mahler said.

He went on to say that all he cares about is that the work of his ministry gets done and is done to the level that he needs it.

“As I have said, mediocrity is not an option for us. And I will hold all employees [accountable],” Mahler said. “I have said to them, there are no sacred cows so if you can’t operate at the level that I expect you to operate then you will go home.”

Galvez was terminated from his post in early January.

Shortly after the Briceno administration became the Government of Belize, the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora relations sought the removal of then-Tourism Director, Karen Bevans. After some legal issues regarding her termination, she was eventually replaced with current director Evan Tillett.
