Belize Emergency Response Team offers free CPR training to ‘Reclaim your Rhythm’

By Aaron Humes: Perhaps appropriately in a month that contains Valentine’s Day, February is also Heart Month under the theme “Reclaim Your Rhythm”.

Belize’s primary ambulance and trauma care providers, the Belize Emergency Response Team (BERT) has offered free Hands-Only CPR Training to forty females shared between Belize City and San Pedro.

BERT, an authorized international training center for the American Heart Association, aims to reduce mortality and morbidity by raising awareness about healthy living as well as bystander CPR when emergencies arise. The root causes of heart disease and poor outcomes are unhealthy diet and lifestyle.

According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases claim more than 17.9 million lives each year. More than 90 percent of patients that suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital do not survive.

However, you can make a difference in the lives of those you love, by being aware of what to do when an emergency arises. CPR saves lives, and it can be the greatest asset you will be armed with when a cardiac arrest occurs. A patient’s chance of survival increases two to three times when a bystander renders immediate and lifesaving CPR during a cardiac emergency.
