‘Nah go a jail again’: Accused, remanded armed robber dips police custody at court after bail denied

Posted: Wednesday, February 9, 2022. 4:58 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A well-known Belize City street figure, Edward Saldano, 22, who has been on remand at the Belize Central Prison since September 2021 on a charge of robbery is a free man after pulling a crafty escape at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was again denied bail today.

Saldano appeared in court before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser in his ongoing robbery case stemming from an incident last September. He and another man, Bijoun Barela, were accused of robbing a $1,500 gold chain from a revenue collector with a firearm.

He was once again denied bail in court and seemingly decided he did not want to return to prison. After apparently asking for a restroom break, he made his way past the back corridor, the cell block area, and the front desk area where a police officer is normally posted before making a break for it when he was seen running through the back parking lot by a security guard.

He was to be remanded to prison until April 7 but the prison van left this afternoon without him, his cuffs empty.
