New school building inaugurated for Orange Walk Technical High School

By Aaron Humes: Orange Walk Technical High School has received a brand-new school building at a cost of $1.3 million funded by the Government of Belize in partnership with Caribbean Development Bank under the Social Investment Fund Loan III Program.

It was opened on Thursday by Prime Minister John Briceño; Narda Garcia, Chair of Social Investment Fund (SIF) and Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Finance and Investment; Dian Maheia, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology; and Yolanda Gongora, Chief Education Officer, among others.

The new two-story concrete structure houses eight classrooms, restrooms, office, and storage spaces and comes equipped with an access ramp and sidewalks.

Garcia explained, “This new school building will provide for about 200 plus students from a population of 800 with equitable access and quality education. To this end, students will acquire the necessary skills to effectively achieve academic and vocational excellence in an environment that is conducive to progressive learning.” The school will use it for its shift system of direct instruction to third and fourth form students.

Native son Prime Minister Briceño said Orange Walk Technical has overcome its stigma as the last resort of the less academically inclined and poor, and that those that used to laugh at and mock its principal, staff, and students for dreaming of raising their academic standards now marvel at the product the school has turned out.
