Several countries advising citizens to abandon Ukraine as Russian invasion threat increases

Despite having over 100,000 troops stationed near the Ukraine border, Russia said it doesn’t plan to invade. However, several countries are advising their citizens to abandon Ukraine as they fear a Russian invasion.

Though the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France are trying through diplomacy to avoid an invasion, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned Americans in Ukraine to leave “as soon as possible,” according to CNN.

Even as it told its citizens to evacuate, the United States sent 3,000 troops to Europe to strengthen the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) allies, said Time.

The BBC reported that the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office told British citizens that they should leave as long as “commercial means are available”.

Japan, Latvia, Norway, and the Netherlands did likewise.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said a Russian invasion of Ukraine was possible before February 20 when the Winter Olympics end.
