Taximan charged for assaulting police officer- remanded to prison

Posted: Friday, February 11, 2022. 8:42 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: A Belize City taxi driver charged with assaulting a police officer was remanded to the Belize Central Prison today after being unable to post his bail.

Forty-two-year-old Tyrone Martinez appeared unrepresented to answer to a charge of assaulting an officer.

The allegation against him is that on Thursday around 9:00 p.m, a mobile patrol unit driving around the Newton Barracks area saw Martinez in public with his mask under his chin.

The officers came up to him and informed him of his crime when they noticed he had something on him that looked like a stick of marijuana. The officers tried to search him and he pushed one PC Phillips who then stumbled as a result.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same; however, he was unable to meet his bail and was remanded to prison until he can do so. He is due back in court on April 6, 2022.
