UNICEF donates pediatric and adult scales to Ministry of Health

Posted: Friday, February 11, 2022. 11:19 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness today received a donation of 68 pediatric and adult scales from the Belize office of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

As noted by Minister Kevin Bernard, “While COVID is one of the issues that is at the forefront, there are many other issues affecting this country and we have to focus on nutrition, and especially nutrition in our young children as they are growing up.” The Ministry, he added, is committed to addressing the issue of undernutrition in children, young people, and pregnant women.

The scales will be distributed across the country’s health facilities, allowing each health region to better monitor the growth and development of children and adults and be able to prescribe a healthier diet and lifestyle for growth and wellness.

UNICEF Country Representative Alison Parker added that ensuring that primary health care continues is one of two prongs in addressing the COVID pandemic and child well-being. Having the scales allows for the monitoring of conditions of underweight and overweight children in their first and second years of life and be able to correct them.

The value of the donation is about $17,000 and Parker promised more in the pipeline as part of its collaboration with the Ministry.
