Belmopan City Council condemns acts of violence after Saturday night’s fatal shooting

Posted: Sunday, February 13, 2022. 6:18 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belmopan City Council issued a statement today, condemning acts of violence in the city and offering its condolences to the family of 20-year-old Karina Andrews, who was killed in the shooting incident in Belmopan last night.

The Council said that it is “heartbroken” at the news of the incident and concerned at the increase in violent crimes within the municipality. The council is calling on the police and the community to take immediate action to address the growing problem.

“We must repair community trust in the system, and we encourage witnesses to come forward with information that can lead to the arrest of those who have brought this senseless violence to our city. We will do our part to work with the Belmopan Police Department in developing a comprehensive plan for the implementation of proper community policing and to develop new initiatives aimed at preventing violent crimes,” the council said.

The council also said that a clear message needs to be sent to criminals that the city has zero-tolerance for crime. The council also said that it will work together with the Belize Police Department to identify programs to engage teens and young adults in meaningful activities, identify hotspots for violence and deploy more resources in areas that are prone to violence.
