Drunken man punches friend in the face; pleads guilty to harm

By BBN Staff: A Belize City man was fined in court today after pleading guilty to punching a man he knows in the face while under the influence of alcohol.

Thirty-nine-year-old Clifford Calbert Stephens appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court and immediately pleaded guilty to a charge of harm upon 51-year-old, Faustus Felix Lucheck Castillo.

Stephens, in mitigation, told the court that he is known to behave violently when drinking. Since it was his first conviction and he immediately pleaded guilty, he was fined $600 plus $5 cost of court. He has until May 13 to pay his fine or he will spend three months in prison.

Castillo told police that on Monday, February 6, he was socializing on Iguana Street and saw Stephens, who he has known for the past five years. He clains he called out to Stephens who responded by punching him in the face.
