By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) conducted training in soil amendment and mixing for Belize City garden-farming projects at the Hub on Friday, February 11.

“Gary Ramirez, Horticulture Coordinator, took his team to The HUB in Belize City, a community resource center located at the foot of the Chetumal bridge,” said MAFSE in a social media post.

“They conducted training in soil amendment and soil mixing for gardens. Participants included students from The Hub, Days of Healing Youth Organization, and the Belize City Council Urban Gardening Project.”

In their promotion of urban gardening, MAFSE has been working with several organizations based in Belize City. MAFSE has assisted the organizations with seedlings and technical guidance in growing seedlings, caring for vegetables, soil preparation, and greenhouse protocols.

“This is part of a Southside urban garden initiative,” said Ramirez. “That is out of a conversation between Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai and Minister Cordel Hyde, the area rep for that area. Days of Healing, headed by Mr. Perry Smith had pitched an idea for an urban garden area for him to engage young people which is part of what he does. He does a number of fundraising initiatives as well as look for activities to engage young people in the area that would ordinarily engage in crime.”

Ramirez said they built a covered structure unit in the Vernon St area for Days of Healing.

A greenhouse was also built at the Hub on Lake Independence Boulevard near the Chetumal bridge.

“A number of agencies are involved there,” said Ramirez.

“The Belize Red Cross through its Disaster Emergency Fund Project is the sponsor. They provided the funding. The recipient is the Ministry of Human Development, The Hub, and implementation is being done by the Ministry of Agriculture.”

As to the Belize City Council Urban Gardening Project, Ramirez said that they also got assistance from the Belize Red Cross Disaster Emergency Fund Project.

“The Red Cross was able to stretch the funding and approved funding for the Belize City Council for a property on Police Street Extension for another greenhouse,” Ramirez said.
