By Aaron Humes: The Department of the Environment within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management has reminded the public that under the Environmental Protection (Pollution from Plastics) Regulations that were recently amended with the passing of Statutory Instrument No. 17 of 2022, no person is allowed to sell, import or use any single-use non-biodegradable plastic or Styrofoam container or equipment.

“In consideration of the date to cease production of prohibited products and the resulting stockpiles that may arise, NO BUSINESS, ESTABLISHMENT OR PERSON shall sell these products commencing February 28, 2022. Finally, NO PERSON, BUSINESS OR ENTITY shall possess these prohibited items as of March 31, 2022,” the Ministry writes.

It adds, “Kindly note that any person, business, or entity that is in contravention of these regulations commits an OFFENCE and is liable to summary conviction as outlined in the relevant sub-regulations. Note also that the Department of the Environment along with the Belize Bureau of Standards will continue to monitor and enforce the Environmental Protection (Pollution from Plastics) Regulations as amended in January 2022.”
