Inspector of police and his girlfriend both charged with common assault following domestic dispute

By BBN Staff: Twenty-seven-year-old Selena Francis was charged with common assault today against her boyfriend Inspector of Police David Mckoy, 33, who was given the same charge in connection with the same incident yesterday.

Francis appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where she pleaded not guilty. There was no objection to bail, so it was granted to her in the sum of $500 plus one surety of the same. Under the conditions of her bail, she should not interfere with any of the prosecution’s witnesses and must maintain a minimum distance of 100 yards from McKoy.

She is due back in court on March 2.

Yesterday Mckoy was arraigned for common assault before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford. He was also offered bail and his case was adjourned until April.

In a statement to police, McKoy said that on February 13, he took Francis to a grocery store where they ended up having a misunderstanding. He said that he left and returned to the vehicle, where she followed and continued to make a scene, eventually grabbing him by his face and slapping him.

He also claims that Francis tried to take his phone from him because he was recording her, and when she was unsuccessful she called the police, and they were both escorted to the Domestic Violence Unit at the Belama Police Station.
