Bu Rubén Morales Iglesias: Xibalba/PACT, comprised of Amado Cruz and Daniel Cruz, won the Shaila & Chastelyn Land Consultancy New River Race held on Sunday in the Corozal District, according to Total Time Belize.

The New River canoe race, organized by Dave Newton and sponsored by Shaila & Chastelyn Land Consultancy, was extremely competitive with only 2.9 seconds separating the front two. The race started and finished at the New River ferry that connects the Sarteneja Road covering the 18.25-mile New River Loop.

The two Cruzes finished the race in two hours, 51 minutes, 18.7 seconds (2:51:18.7).

Newton said the top teams were not very happy with their finish because they expected faster times.

“The New River is dead water, so it was extremely hard on them,” said Newton.

“They thought they were going to be quicker. I paddle that route all the time and our best time was 3:20:00. They thought they were going to do it in 2:30:00. I’m like, I don’t think you’re going to take that much out on me. I ended up doing 3:11:00 on the day. The winner, Amado did 2 hours and 51 minutes.”

They were followed by the Thomas Penner team of two more Cruzes, Efrain Cruz and Henner Cruz who were clocked at 2:51:21.6.

The Belize Coast Guard team of Wilberto Daniels and Kenrick Daniels were third in 2:51:36.6, 17.9 seconds behind the winners.

Guava Limb’s Javier Guardado and Andres Cabb were fourth in 2:52:52.1. They were 1:33.4 behind Xibalba/PACT.

Fifth place was taken by team C’s Pharmacy. Comprised of Carlos Linares and Jesús Linares they were timed at 2:54:46.6. They were 3:27.9 behind the winners.
