“Belize Fund for A Sustainable Future” is new name of national conservation fund

By Aaron Humes: The Blue Bond Conservation Fund established as a result of the debt conversion agreement now has a new name: “Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future.”

The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) opened the selection to a public vote by social media and email from three shortlisted names; the BFSF got the majority of the vote.

Those who participated in the naming competition were invited to register their names in order to win one of two prizes. The two lucky winners were selected during the LIVE Name Reveal. They are: Maria Tepaz, Cayo District; and Ernesto Thimbriel, Belmopan. Each winner will receive a fabulous weekend for four in San Pedro where they will enjoy a snorkeling tour at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve – an iconic protected area that embodies Belize’s decades-long commitment to marine conservation.

The new BFSF will be populated by US$84 million in funds over the next 20 years provided by the Government under the TNC’s “Blue Bonds for Ocean Conservation” agreement, the world’s largest debt restructuring for marine conservation to date. A further estimated US$92 million will be made available by endowment by 2041.

These funds will support Belize’s commitment to protect 30% of its marine and coastal environments — the essential natural resources on which our economic future depends. The process of legally establishing the Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future is now underway and the Government of Belize and TNC have committed to engaging with Belizean stakeholders throughout this process.
