By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) head coach Wayne Casimiro said Belize is prepared to represent Belize well against El Salvador in the Women’s FIFA World Cup qualifying game on Wednesday.
“I think we have done as much as we could, given the situation with the pandemic. We’ve done the physical aspect of the game, the tactical aspect and I think the girls are prepared to step on the pitch tomorrow and represent Belize well,” said Casimiro in a promotional live stream done by the Football Federation of Belize’s Communications and Marketing Director Yashmin Juan.
“We’re asking everyone to cheer on the players, so please, don’t be afraid to be behind us.”
Casimiro said in a pregame press conference at the Cuscatlán Stadium before the team checked out the pitch that the BWNT had studied videos of El Salvador selection.
“We are here to compete, ready to participate in the group and the aim is to qualify from the group,” he told the media.
When asked what Belize’s greatest challenge is, Casimiro said COVID-19 had affected the work of the BWNT.
“For us it is, like for every other team, the pandemic. Some of our players that were to be here aren’t because of contracting COVID. For us that would be our biggest obstacle,” he said.
However, he said the team had been in camp and “so we’re set”.
“We’re just ready to face any team that comes. [The game] plays on the pitch,” Casimiro said.
“Football comes with different systems and the game is going to be dictated by what happens on the pitch. Our game plan is to be able to adjust to what our opponent does on the pitch and to be able to overcome any obstacles that we face while we’re playing.
Casimiro also mentioned that for the first time Belize has a foreign-based player in reference to Mikhaila Bowden who plays for FC Golden State in the United States.
“We have one player from the United States, who is a Belizean but lives in LA. She’s joined the team, and this is the first time our National Team has a player from outside,” Casimiro noted.
Belize plays against El Salvador on Wednesday at 3:30 pm at the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador. The match is both countries first qualifying match on the road to the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
