By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Guatemala’s National Coordinating Agency for the Reduction of Disasters (Conred) confirms three deaths that occurred related to the Wednesday morning 6.8 earthquake which woke up citizens around the Central American country.

Conred reported that three people died due to heart attacks provoked by the earthquake.

According to Prensa Libre, the victims were 50-year-old Marta Ical Choc from San Cristóbal, Mixco, which is part of the greater Guatemala City. The second victim is Jorge Daniel Ixquiac Pérez, 44, from Quetzaltenango, the second-largest city. And the third was 34-year-old Angelina Chen Oboy in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz.

Guatemalan president Alejandro Giammattei told people to remain alert and to follow the official sources such as Conred, the police, the army, and firefighters, during a Conred press conference.

Giammattei also warned against people who post videos because quite a number posted photos and videos of previous earthquakes.

The earthquake, which occurred at 1:12 am and measured 6.8 on the Richter scale according to Conred, was reported internationally as a 6.2 magnitude quake. Two replicas of 5.0 and 4.8 magnitude were reported.

Regardless, it caused rock and landslides which cut off highways and damaged or collapsed buildings.

The quake had its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean and the coast of the Department of Escuintla in the south of Guatemala affecting 18 departments of Guatemala’s 22 and causing damage in seven departments, said Conred.
