By Aaron Humes: U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Leyla Moses-Ones and her husband, Dr. Kyle Ones, were this week guests for a familiarization tour of The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center.
The couple was given a tour by Director, Celso Poot and General Curator, Humberto Wohlers.
Founded by American-born Sharon Matola in 1985, the Zoo has hosted thousands over the years and rapidly built its name as “The Best Little Zoo in the World” with such attractions as the late April the tapir; jaguar Junior Buddy and harpy eagle Panama.
The Zoo noted that it has hosted many U.S. diplomats over the years, including Ambassadors and their families: “In 2020 we were the recipient of the Embassy’s CARSI grant for a project entitled “Enhancing Community Health through Fire Management in Central Belize. We look forward to a continued working relationship with the U.S. Embassy Belize.”
