Cabinet plans revival of National Health Insurance scheme

By Aaron Humes: As part of its meeting this week, Cabinet met with the executive team of the National Health Insurance (NHI) to discuss the critical role of the NHI in the reform of the health sector.

It is a critical campaign promise by the ruling People’s United Party and the NHI team has been staffed with former Health Ministry CEO Dr. Deysi Mendez among others.

The Cabinet was informed of the implementation and performance of the NHI services in several areas of the country and its positive impact on these communities.

Plans for the further rollout of the NHI Program, as outlined in Plan Belize, were also discussed and Cabinet will decide on the way forward after further deliberations.

At present, NHI is only active in southside Belize City and the Toledo District and is limited to primary care services.
