Immigration data shows steady flow of travel across land borders in first week of re-opening

Posted: Friday, February 18, 2022. 10:57 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: According to our colleagues at KREM News, 10,708 Belizeans crossed all land borders during the first week of re-opening from February 7 to 13.

On the first day, according to data from the Ministry of Immigration, 1,050 Belizeans crossed the border. The numbers rose on the second day to 1,464 Belizeans departing the country. On the third day, the departures totaled 1,585. On the fourth day, there were 1,483 and on the 5th day, the numbers went up to 1,773. Saturday, February 12 saw the highest number of departures for the first week of reopening at 1,794 while Sunday saw 1,559.

The Monday figure was shown to be higher than the previous 6 Mondays. However, it was 74 persons less than the Monday preceding Christmas, December 20, 2021, which saw a total of 1,124 Belizeans travel across the land borders. Prior to the borders reopening on February 7, travel has been allowed throughout the pandemic for cargo and medical emergencies.

The total number of Belizeans who traveled to Mexico using the land border in the first week since the reopening is 3,412. Tuesdays generally appear to see a higher number of travelers.

There have been concerns about testing costs for travelers spending the day in Chetumal, Melchor, and other border towns and destinations.
