Drowning reported in Freshpond, Burrell Boom

By BBN Staff: A swimming trip ended in tragedy this weekend as a 21-year-old Belize City resident drowned during the outing. 
 
Reports are that 21-year-old Jahleel Mitchell and others went swimming at the Sandpit area in the Fresh Pond, Burrell Boom Village.
 
While there, Mitchell reportedly went to the deeper side of the pond and began gasping for air and struggling to stay afloat. None of the others with him were good swimmers, so one of them went to a nearby house for help. 
 
Derrick McFadzean, a Belize Defense Force soldier living in Fresh Pond responded to the call for help but by the time he arrived, Mitchell had already drowned. McFadzen assisted in retrieving Mitchell’s body from the pond, and authorities pronounced him dead sometime after. 
 
Police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
