By BBN Staff: Police have managed to arrest and charge a man believed to be a member of a group of five that robbed Sam’s Club in Santa Elena last month.

Today officers formally arrested and charged Kaylon Anthony Vanegas, a 22-year-old, Belizean construction worker, of Teakettle Village, Cayo District for the crime of robbery.

The robbery occurred on the night of January 22. The five-man team entered the store armed with guns and began pistol-whipping customers. The group made off with an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, which was the day’s sales, a number of electronic items including six laptops, and a cellphone stolen from a customer in the store.

Meanwhile, four people had to be treated at the hospital for lacerations to their faces and head from the beating. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed after the incident that one of the suspects being investigated for the robbery was a former police officer who was dismissed over a year prior to the incident.

The other four culprits have yet to be charged.
