Agriculture Ministry sends Belizean products to El Salvador; Minister Jose Abelardo Mai travels to El Salvador to discuss markets for those products

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai is traveling to El Salvador on Monday to promote samples of Belizean agricultural products sent to El Salvador last week and to discuss markets for those products in El Salvador.

Minister Mai is meeting with David Martínez, El Salvador’s Minister of Agriculture during his visit.

“We sent carrots, onions, potatoes, watermelons, oranges, pineapples, ginger, and yellow corn,” said Minister Mai.

“As we prepare to travel to El Salvador on Monday to promote our products, we are informed that our samples which were sent in advance have arrived safely and in good quality. We used the appropriate transport with temperature control.”

Mai said that apart from Minister Martínez, the MAFSE delegation will be meeting with Salvadoran importers and market wholesale vendors to negotiate prices, quality, and quantity.

Minister Mai is accompanied by Policy Analyst in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), Milagro Matus; the Belize Marketing Development Corporation (BMDC) Managing Director Valentin Carrillo; the BMDC marketing officer Sergio Tillett, and three farmers’ leaders from several of the production areas, namely Julio Perez and Luis Gonzalez, Farmer from Orange Walk, and Edgar Fuentes from Cayo.

“We are grateful for the great support that our ambassador [Cherie Nisbet] has provided!! It could not be possible without her,” said Minister Mai.

The Agriculture Minister met with his Salvadoran counterpart in El Salvador during a visit in October 2021. During that visit, Minister Mai visited El Salvador markets and saw the products they have there, and looked at the possibilities for Belize to export agricultural products to the neighboring country.

The Belizean delegation is traveling by land to El Salvador via Guatemala.
