Belize’s Women’s National Football Team (BWNT) fell 8-0 to Panama in the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers on Sunday at the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador.
The BWNT had come off a 6-0 loss to El Salvador on Wednesday of last week and were expecting a better performance against Panama, but the opponents were too strong and routed our squad.
The BWNT came out pushing forward and looking good, but a foul in the box gave Panama a penalty kick which Yomira Pinzón scored in the 11’. That goal changed the pace of the game with Panama taking over control and never looking back, nailing seven more before the long whistle.
Lineth Cedeño scored a hat trick for Panama converting in the 25’ (PK), 36’, and 86’.
Natalia Mills added a brace in the 16’ and 71’.
Yerenis de León scored from a header in the 45’ and Yeisi Fuentes did likewise in the 52’.
In Belize’s only opportunity, Reah Burgess (5) had a good break at goal but Jayda Brown (2) pushed her out of the way and her left footed shot went wide.
In the other group match, El Salvador whipped Aruba 7-1 in St Kitts and Nevis on Saturday.
Panama and El Salvador lead Group D with six points, Barbados, Aruba, and Belize don’t have any. Barbados has only played one game while Belize has played two.
