European Union hands over a new 17 Million Euro Multiannual Cooperation programme to Government of Belize

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The European Union handed over a new 17 million Euro Multiannual Cooperation Indicative Programme to the Government of Belize. The handing over of the Cooperation between Belize and the European Union was done during a meeting between Prime Minister John Briceño and Marianne Van Steen, the European Union’s Ambassador to the Caribbean.

The Prime Minister said in a social media post that the new country agreement, which is valued at approximately BZ$ 38.7 million, includes three priority areas.

“Green growth and sustainable socio-economic development is Priority Area 1 to work with our southern districts in areas of sustainable management of natural resources, environmental preservation, rural transformation, income generation, and inclusion of indigenous communities into the social fabric,” wrote the Prime Minister.

He said Priority Area 2 is Regional Integration and Border Management and that Priority Area will concentrate on strengthening relations between Belize and the European Union and working with national civil society agencies across multiple sectors.

The Prime Minister was accompanied at the meeting by his Chief Executive Officer Narda Garcia and the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment (MED) Dr Osmond Martinez.

The Ministry of Economic Development, within which lies the National Authorizing Office, is responsible to oversee the project.
