Police believe Lejean Rhamdas’ murder was gang-related

Posted: Monday, February 21, 2022. 12:27 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Police believe that gang violence is the likely motive for the murder of 25-year-old Lejean Maurice Rhamdas who was gunned down in Belize City last week.

Rhamdas was at the Minds and Hearts Car Wash on Albert Street when two men came and shot him. Despite undergoing surgery he later died of his injuries at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Today, head of communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood said that Rhamdas was likely the intended target, given he was the one at the car wash that was hit by the barrage of bullets.

“All indications are that it might have been gang-related,” Yearwood said.

He noted that several people have been detained by police and that the department hopes to make an arrest very soon in connection with the case.

Rhamdas was released from the Belize Central Prison on bail in January, after being charged with illegal possession of a gun and ammunition; however, Yearwood said that the firearm charge is believed to be unrelated.

His death marks the second time someone at one of the community hubs created by the U.S. Embassy, LOVE Foundation, and Kolbe Foundation was attacked. The first was the fatal 2020 shooting of Terrence Rhaburn in an armed assault at the St. Martin’s One Stop Auto Care Shop on Partridge Street Extension.

Police investigations continue.
