Police treating Jahleel Mitchell drowning as a ‘death investigation’

Posted: Monday, February 21, 2022. 2:42 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Police department is conducting an investigation into the drowning death of 21-year-old Jahleel Mitchell, which occurred over the weekend.

On Sunday, Mitchell and three others went to the Fresh Pond Sand Pitt area of Burrell Boom Village on a swimming trip. Mitchell later went into a deeper portion of the pond and then began having trouble staying afloat. His friends could not assist him as they were not good swimmers but instead went to a nearby house to get someone to help.

However by the time help arrived, Mitchell was already dead. Today Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, said that because of the nature of the situation police still have to investigate the situation thoroughly.

“When it’s a drowning we still treat it as loss of life, so we are investigating it,” Yearwood said.

He noted that the friends who were with Mitchell have since been questioned by police.
