By Aaron Humes: As even Minister of Health Kevin Bernard acknowledges, “a huge sum of money” was spent retrofitting five public health facilities including the Cleopatra White Polyclinic in Belize City which was handed over on Monday.
Therefore, it is critical for him that the Ministry develop protocols for maintaining all health facilities in order to preserve both finances and maintenance costs.
“Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance; we cannot continue to have investments in our health facilities and we forget the main issue that has to be done after, which is constant maintenance. We have to make sure that that is part of ‘the Bible’ as they say in health,” Bernard said.
He will emphasize the issue to his colleagues, pointing out that it does not look good when we have to run to the same donors of facilities such as these and ask them to once again contribute when we haven’t done enough to maintain what is already there.
