Oscar Quiroz wins Digi Valentine’s Cycling Tour; 501 Valvoline sweeps podium

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Oscar Quiroz wins the 2022 Digi Valentine’s Cycling Tour staged by the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB), and his team 501 Valvoline Cycling Club swept the podium taking to Top Three spots.

Quiroz won the 3.6-mile time trial Prologue on Saturday morning in 7 minutes 24 seconds, 18 faster than his teammate Derrick Chavarria and 24 seconds faster than Westrac Alliance’s Eric Trapp. Quiroz was able to maintain the lead throughout the next two stages.

In stage two, won by his teammate Brandon Cattouse on the 60-mile Bermudian Landing circuit on Saturday afternoon, Quiroz finished third with the same time: 1:48:01. He now led with a cumulative time of 1:55:21, 21 seconds ahead of teammate Chavarria and 25 ahead of teammate Cattouse. Westrac Alliance had the next two riders. Trapp trailed by 28 secs and Byron Pope by 38. Quiroz led independent Robert Liam Stewart by 39 seconds, FAL’s Marlon Castillo by 41, and G Flow’s Giovanni Lovell by 43.

Then, in the 102-mile Stage 3 on the George Price Highway, Boom Road, and the Philip Goldson Highway, Quiroz finished 13th but was only one second behind G Flow’s Giovanni Lovell who won the stage in 4:16:44.

That gave him the crown, finishing with a total time of 6:12:05. His 501 Valvoline teammates were right behind; Cattouse was second in 6:12:19 (14+ seconds) and Chavarria third in 6:6:12:24 (19+ seconds).

Trapp was fourth in 6:12:32 (27+), and Lovell and Pope tied for fifth at 6:12:38 (33+).

501 Valvoline also swept the other two categories with Cattouse finishing as first Masters and Chavarria as the first U-23.

In the Masters 35+ category, M&M Engineering’s Roque Matus was second and Castillo third.

Matus topped the Masters 45+ followed by Kulture’s Vallan Symns and M&M’s Preston Martinez.

In the U23, Trapp was second and G-Flow’s Shawn Codd third.
