Two men walk free from separate murder charges in Supreme Court after prosecution drops charges

Posted: Tuesday, February 22, 2022. 6:47 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Tonight, two Belize City men who were facing murder charges are free men after their cases were dropped by the prosecution.

Twenty-five-year-old Joel Choco was previously charged with the 2017 murder of Windell Gibson, 27, and the attempted murder of Karron Santos, who was shot and injured during the incident which occurred in the Conch Shell Bay area of Belize City.

In court, the prosecution entered a nolle prosequi, which means that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to abandon the case, but no reasons were given as to why. Another man who was charged with Gibson’s murder, Orlando Salazar, had the charges withdrawn from him back in 2019.

The second case to end in nolle prosequi was that of Sherman Rodney. Rodney was accused of beating up 35-year-old Lloyd Augustine in April 2014 and caused injuries that Augustine would later die from months later.

Again, no reason was given as to why the Office of the DPP decided to abandon the case.

The cases was dealt with before newly appointed Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Ricardo Sandcroft.
