Fifth member of group caught with illegal lumber recovers from COVID-19; arraigned in court

By BBN Staff: The last member of a five-man group caught with illegal lumber last month has finally been arraigned, after recovering from a bout with COVID-19.

Thirty-three-year-old Hartman Jackson appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, answering to two forestry offence charges.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $1,500 plus one surety of the same amount which he met by 12 noon.

He joins co-accused Louis Crawford, 31; Granville Crawford, 50; Robert Chi, 39; and Byron Jimenez, 28, who all pleaded not guilty and were offered bail in the same amount.

Allegations are that on On Friday, January 21, 2022, the group of men were found at a Sawmill site, Corozalito Village in possession of 12 Santa Marua logs equivalent to 534.4 board feet, 14 drunken baymen logs equivalent to 615 board feet, 43 pieces of sawn drunken baymen lumber equivalent to 401.3 board full, 9 Gombolimbo logs equivalent to 965 board feet, 117 pieces of sawn Gombolimbo lumber equivalent to 454 board feet, 2 Habin logs equivalent to 96.3 board feet, 2 black poison wood logs equivalent to 222.6 board feet, 2 bastard Rosewood logs equivalent to 128.8 board feet, 1 Cotton Tree log equivalent to 233.8 board feet, 10 bullet tree log equivalent to 80 board feet all of which they had no logging license granted to them to have by the Forest Department.
